The top myths surrounding gut health"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"d4108-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"d4108-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"d4108-0-0\">When I was asked to speak on Channel 4&#8217;s documentary all about gut health, I knew I had to do it to make sure the science was represented among the diet cr*p.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"3bupm-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3bupm-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3bupm-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"btvms-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"btvms-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"btvms-0-0\">Better to make change from the inside than from the sideline right?! Yes they edited out some things I said, but my message was (hopefully) loud and clear:<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"858ri-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"858ri-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"858ri-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"b8pvp-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b8pvp-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b8pvp-0-0\">You do NOT need to go on a restrictive or extreme diet, cut out food groups, &#8216;purge&#8217; or spend your hard-earned on some expensive &#8216;detox&#8217; regime to have good gut health.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"4ci98-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"4ci98-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4ci98-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"7nj81-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7nj81-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7nj81-0-0\">Here&#8217;s why I wouldn&#8217;t recommend what they put to the test&#8230;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"djcgd-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"djcgd-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"djcgd-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"5nvtr-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5nvtr-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5nvtr-0-0\"><strong>Bone broth<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5nvtr-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5nvtr-0-0\">It might ease gut symptoms in the short term, just because it&#8217;s giving your gut a rest by removing the fibre. BUT restricting this fibre long-term starves your gut bacteria &#8211; a bad idea for your gut health!<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"bcqqu-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"bcqqu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"bcqqu-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"8f1r8-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8f1r8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8f1r8-0-0\"><strong>Colon cleanses<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8f1r8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8f1r8-0-0\">There&#8217;s no scientific evidence to suggest any health benefits and could be dangerous when it&#8217;s done in unregulated private clinics.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"9u9qb-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9u9qb-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9u9qb-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"d1td7-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"d1td7-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"d1td7-0-0\">Sure, it can relieve constipation in the short term (like a laxative would) BUT it could flush out good microbes too. It also doesn&#8217;t treat the cause, so stats show you&#8217;ll be bunged up again in no time.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"1samm-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1samm-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1samm-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"pcsf-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"pcsf-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"pcsf-0-0\"><strong>Supplements and shakes<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"pcsf-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"pcsf-0-0\">Fibre supplements just can&#8217;t replace the 100s of different types of fibre from our whole plant-based foods.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"fqclv-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"fqclv-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fqclv-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"edee0-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"edee0-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"edee0-0-0\">A little <strong>sugar<\/strong> isn&#8217;t &#8216;bad&#8217; for your gut microbes either &#8211; it gets digested further up your tract before it reaches most of them. And I certainly wouldn&#8217;t recommend restricting fruits with natural sugars!<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"2ed9e-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2ed9e-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2ed9e-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"b02p-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b02p-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b02p-0-0\">\u00a0<strong>Drinking ghee<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b02p-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b02p-0-0\">There&#8217;s no scientific evidence to suggest it&#8217;s any different than butter overall. Be mindful ghee is ~50% of a type of saturated fat that has been linked with increasing cholesterol.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"nj6c-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"nj6c-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"nj6c-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"8kc49-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8kc49-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8kc49-0-0\"><strong>Vegan diet<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8kc49-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8kc49-0-0\">Adding in more variety of whole plant foods can only be a good thing but just know a &#8216;vegan&#8217; label doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean it&#8217;s good for you and cutting out all animal foods isn\u2019t necessary (for health).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"8btu4-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8btu4-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8btu4-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"eluoe\" data-offset-key=\"5992o-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5992o-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5992o-0-0\">If there&#8217;s one thing you can do right now to look after your gut health, it&#8217;s eating more plants. Diversifying your diet and getting as many different types of plant-based foods.
