But does it actually work? Read on for the facts\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Spoiler: Ultimately, what we now know about nutrition and digestion contradicts it, so I wouldn\u2019t recommend it. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You absolutely can load up your festive feast with all the trimmings (yes, Brussels sprouts too!) on one plate &#8211; don&#8217;t let &#8216;food combining&#8217; ideas stop you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>First, what actually is food combining?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This concept is based on an ancient Ayurvedic theory that, as foods are digested at different speeds, only certain foods should be eaten together (which digest at the same speed) and some should only be eaten separately. Otherwise, say hello to digestive issues and even disease due to the food \u2018rotting\u2019 in your stomach (spoiler: that is NOT the case &#8211; more on that shortly!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the key \u2018rules\u2019 include not eating protein and fat together, only eating fruit alone, and not mixing protein and starch (a type of carbohydrate).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, this isn\u2019t to criticise the spiritual practice of Ayurveda, but it\u2019s important to know that a lot of the claims around \u2018food combining\u2019 aren\u2019t backed up by science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>So what does the science say?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For starters, there was one clinical trial looking at a \u2018food combining\u2019 diet, back in May 2000, and it focused on whether it could impact weight loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, 54 patients with obesity followed 1,100 calories per day diets, all with similar composition and amounts of macronutrients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One half followed a \u2018balanced\u2019 diet with each meal mixing food groups<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other half followed \u2018food combining\u2019 rules, not allowing the consumption of fats and carbohydrates at the same time<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the 6-week study, both groups experienced a significant decrease in total body weight and BMI &#8211; yet there was no difference between the groups. There was also no significant difference between the two groups in cholesterol levels &#8211; indicating there\u2019s no advantage in terms of weight management or heart health to a food combining diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s more&#8230;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the specific trial looking at food combining, wider modern science simply doesn\u2019t validate this type of eating&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t just eat nutrients, we eat real, whole foods. And most foods contain a mix of macronutrients (beans, for example, are a good source of protein and carbohydrates), so it\u2019s not really possible to only eat one macronutrient at a time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our bodies are designed to break down and digest different food groups within the same meal, as our digestive enzymes are constantly working together.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our stomach is naturally very acidic and much more concentrated than a piece of fruit, so adding fruit alongside other foods is not going to cause stomach problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No food or drink is going to change your body\u2019s pH level, no matter what the food combo &#8211; it\u2019s really closely controlled.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food moving faster through your digestive system doesn\u2019t mean you absorb more nutrients. Food doesn\u2019t \u2018rot\u2019 in your stomach either, regardless of what you\u2019ve eaten it with &#8211; instead, your digestive enzymes do a good job of breaking it down into molecules that can be absorbed into our bloodstream.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, combining carbohydrates with protein and good fat sources can help to balance blood sugar levels and keep you satisfied for longer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>But what about people who\u2019ve said \u2018food combining\u2019 has really worked for them &#8211; what\u2019s the deal there?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people do say they\u2019ve found it helpful for bloating or feeling healthier &#8211; but that\u2019s likely just down to making better food choices, enjoying more veggies and plant goodness (that\u2019s one thing the diet does allow without restriction!), eating more mindfully and probably limiting more highly processed foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, while it may make some people feel better in the short-term (for the reasons above, rather than the food combining itself), I\u2019d caution against becoming too fixated on any \u2018diet rules\u2019 at the risk of ruining our relationships with food. Don\u2019t forget food is about enjoyment too!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re avoiding fruit or gut-loving resistant starch (found in beans, wholegrains, potatoes and more) &#8211; because the food combining diet dictates it\u2019s not the right time to eat them &#8211; you could well be missing out on key nutrients and depriving your gut microbes of their favourite foods. And we do NOT want hangry microbes!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The one area food <\/b><b><i>pairing<\/i><\/b><b> is a good idea&#8230; 100% plant-based diets.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re following a vegan diet, there are certain nutrients that can be a little trickier to get. That\u2019s where food pairing can come in handy, as some foods contain certain chemicals that can improve the absorption of chemicals in other foods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding vitamin C, for example, while eating a plant-based iron source (non-haem iron) improves our ability to absorb it.
