{"id":4647,"date":"2021-02-22T09:04:06","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T09:04:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theguthealthdoctor.com\/?p=4647"},"modified":"2023-03-17T15:20:55","modified_gmt":"2023-03-17T15:20:55","slug":"hiit-workouts-for-cognitive-function","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theguthealthdoctor.com\/hiit-workouts-for-cognitive-function","title":{"rendered":"HIIT workouts for cognitive function"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A new study shows HIIT workouts benefit our brain function at any age!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We already know exercise is good for us &#8211; and now a new systematic review (when researchers pull together results from lots of studies) highlights the positive effects of high-intensity interval training too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">HIIT is essentially cardio exercise alternating between short bursts of intense exercise and recovery periods. Looking at 23 studies in total, some on the short-term and others long-term effects of HIIT on our brain (i.e. cognition), it was found to&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\"><strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Improve inhibition (ability to focus*) in children and adults in the short-term<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Improve inhibition and working memory** in children in the long-term<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #ed0970;\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">So what does that mean for you?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For adults, it&#8217;s worth thinking about adding some HIIT workouts into your exercise routines if you can for the potential brain benefits!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For your kids, children often do some sort of HIIT naturally &#8211; such as a game like tag that involves short intense bursts of activity &#8211; so it can be easily added into their day to foster better brain health (and why not join in with them?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While you&#8217;re at home, there&#8217;s always PE with Joe Wicks too!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you&#8217;re not a fan of HIIT, exercise more generally is still super important for our gut and overall health. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The most important thing is to find an exercise you enjoy and that you can make part of your regular routine. Yoga has also been linked to supporting brain health if that&#8217;s more your thing<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #ed0970;\">What do you guys prefer?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Before pregnancy, I was a fan of HIIT, but now I&#8217;m enjoying more yoga and mindfulness.
